About 6 km from the Haram — 15–25 minutes by car, depending on the route and the time of day. The drop-off you want is the King Fahd Tunnel entrance, where an escalator brings you up onto the campus beside Gate 79.

This is the first thing everyone asks, so here it is plainly. Our two buildings sit in a quiet residential neighbourhood, not in the hotel district. A cab takes 15–20 minutes even with traffic, and longer at peak times during Ramadan and Hajj.
That is comparable to the walk from many hotels closer in — without the walk. Which matters if you are travelling with children, with parents, or simply intend to make the journey five times a day.
After the distance, this is what people ask about most — how old the building is, whether there is a lift, and what you can see from it. Photographs answer that better than we can.
This is the building, photographed from the street. It was finished less than four years ago and is residential rather than converted — which is the honest answer to the question we are asked most after the distance one.
You will not be carrying suitcases up stairs after a night flight, and you will not be doing it again at 4am on the way to Fajr. The lift runs from the parking level to the top floor.
Park under the building and come up in the lift. In summer that matters more than it sounds — the car is out of the sun and you are out of the heat within a minute of arriving.
Our other address sits in the same neighbourhood, a two minute drive from the first. Same arrangement: lift, covered parking, a residential street rather than a hotel strip.
Taken from the pavement in front of the building. The Royal Clock Tower stands over the Haram, so this is the direction you travel every time you go — and it is visible from some of the apartment windows too.
The tower is lit through the night. Guests tell us this is the moment the trip starts to feel real — walking out of the door and seeing it there.
Shaded seating, grass and playground equipment, thirty seconds from the door. Somewhere for children to be children after a long day, and somewhere to sit in the evening that is not a hotel lobby.
The restaurant a minute from the door — traditional Saudi chicken and rice, and the Al Faham is what to order. A local place rather than one that exists for visitors.

This is the drop-off you want. Off-peak it is about 15 minutes door to door.
From the tunnel entrance an escalator brings you up onto the main campus.
The escalator comes out very close to Gate 79, already inside the campus.
Return the same way. Save the tunnel entrance on your phone before you set off.
At peak times many drivers will not take the tunnel entrance. They will drop you at a different gate, outside the campus, which leaves you a walk to get in. If you ask why, you will usually be told the road is closed. Sometimes it is. Often it is simply that the tunnel is congested and leaving it costs the driver twenty minutes.
Most drivers speak little English, so there is rarely a way to discuss it in the moment. We would rather you heard this from us now than decided later that we had described the journey dishonestly. The Haram campus is enormous and has many entrances; arriving at a different one is normal, not a sign that anything has gone wrong.
Show the driver this before you set off. It removes the conversation entirely.
Airbnb measures in a straight line. Google Maps measures along the roads, and the roads here do not run straight. The same journey can read as 3 km on one and 6 km on the other. Both are correct; only one of them is a journey you can take. We quote the driving figure.
